Online Poker Technology: Security
Hackers, phishers, and crackers are all potential problems for online poker companies. However, no successful security lapses have ever been made public. This does not mean it has not happened. Regardless, it is important for online poker companies to keep their security current and strong.
- Network security and integrity
Online poker companies keep their systems secure through strong encryption methods and secure centers to store their servers and databases. This can include keeping their servers behind locked cages that are monitored 24 hours a day. They also employ random system checks to ensure their network is running properly and has not been compromised. While most companies will not disclose too many of their security protocols, it is safe to assume they keep an eye on their employees to prevent internal problems and keep their systems up-to-date with the latest software patches.
Many similar businesses are also known to hire people to try and break into their systems as a safety protocol. The idea being that if someone they hire can do it, then so can a person with malicious intent. It can be assumed that some online poker companies employ similar methods, but there is no public information to confirm this.
To date no security breaches have been reported to the public. - Phishing
Preventing phishing is mostly the responsibility of the customer. The most that online poker companies can do to protect from phishers is to make customers aware that the issue exists and recommend steps to prevent it. Basically, don't trust e-mails requesting your account and password information. There is no reason they would need this information, it is stored on their servers. If a customer gets such an e-mail and is uncertain about its authenticity they should call the company and ignore the e-mail for the time being.
